Is Cleaning Covered by the NDIS?

What NDIS funding pays for when it comes to cleaning, what it usually won’t cover, and how to get cleaning help into your plan.

Fully insured Police-checked 7 days a week Upfront pricing
Quick answerYes. The NDIS can fund regular household cleaning when your disability makes it hard to keep your home clean and safe, and the support is reasonable and necessary. Cleaning is funded from your Core Supports – Assistance with Daily Life budget under support item 01_020_0120_1_1.
What’s covered

Cleaning tasks the NDIS usually funds

NDIS cleaning is about everyday household tasks you can’t easily do yourself because of your disability:

  • Cleaning the kitchen – benches, sink, stovetop
  • Cleaning bathrooms and toilets
  • Vacuuming and mopping floors
  • Dusting and wiping surfaces
  • Tidying and decluttering rooms
  • Changing bed linen
  • Taking out bins
  • Wiping high-touch surfaces
What’s not covered

Cleaning the NDIS usually won’t pay for

These are generally treated as one-off, heavy-duty or property-related jobs rather than daily living support:

  • Bond, vacate or end-of-lease cleans
  • Carpet steam cleaning
  • Mould removal or remediation
  • Outside windows and outdoor areas
  • Home maintenance and repairs
  • Biohazard cleaning
  • Cleaning for other people in the home
  • Everyday costs like cleaning products you buy yourself

If you need one of these, we can do it as a separate, privately paid job — for example vacate cleaning, carpet cleaning or window cleaning.

Eligibility

What “reasonable and necessary” means for cleaning

The NDIA funds supports that are reasonable and necessary. For cleaning, that usually comes down to a few plain questions:

  • Is it related to your disability? Your disability makes cleaning hard, unsafe or exhausting — for example because of pain, fatigue, limited mobility, balance, vision or cognitive challenges.
  • Does it help you live more independently? A clean home helps you stay safe, healthy and living where you want to live.
  • Is it value for money? The hours asked for match what your home actually needs.
  • Would it be reasonable to expect family to do it? The NDIA considers what informal support is realistically available.
Step by step

How to get cleaning in your NDIS plan

  1. Check your current planLook for funding in your Core Supports budget. Core funding is generally flexible, so you may be able to use it for cleaning already. Your plan manager or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) can confirm.
  2. Gather evidenceA report from your occupational therapist, or a letter from your GP or specialist, explaining how your disability affects household tasks makes a big difference.
  3. Describe a typical weekExplain which cleaning tasks you can’t do, what happens when they don’t get done, and how often you need help.
  4. Raise it at your plan reviewAsk your planner or LAC to include cleaning support. If your needs have changed before your review is due, you can ask the NDIA for a plan reassessment.
  5. Book your cleanerOnce it’s funded, get a quote from us and we’ll set up a regular day and time that suits you.

    NDIS cleaning funding FAQs

Does the NDIS pay for cleaning?
Yes. The NDIS can fund household cleaning when your disability makes it hard to keep your home clean and the support is reasonable and necessary. It’s paid from your Core Supports – Assistance with Daily Life budget.
    Which NDIS budget covers cleaning?
Core Supports – Assistance with Daily Life, using support item 01_020_0120_1_1 (House Cleaning and Other Household Activities).
Does the NDIS cover a bond or end-of-lease clean?
Usually not. Bond cleans are generally treated as a one-off cost of moving rather than daily living support. We can still do your bond clean as a separately paid job.
Does the NDIS cover carpet steam cleaning?
Generally no. Carpet steam cleaning is treated as heavy-duty cleaning. It’s available from us as a privately paid service.
What if cleaning isn’t in my plan?
Check whether your Core budget can be used flexibly first. If not, raise it at your next plan review with supporting evidence, or ask for a plan reassessment if your needs have changed.
How often can I have NDIS cleaning?
It depends on what’s funded in your plan. Weekly and fortnightly cleans are the most common.
